Thomas Rowling was born 1817 in Redruth, Cornwall, England to William Rawling, a Butcher, and Mary Williams of Town.

Thomas married Elizabeth Pascoe, the daughter of Nicholas Pascoe, a Tinner of Camborne and Mary Anne Handcock.

Thomas migrated to New Zealand on board the expedition ship Will Watch in 1841 and the story goes Thomas was nicknamed "Hop ashore, Tom" for being the first (on board the expedition) to step ashore.
