William, a bookbinder by trade, enlisted as a Private in Company "D", 1st Virginia Infantry, on 21 April 1861. He was captured at the Battle of Williamsburg on 4 May 1862, and later exchanged.

He was then detailed to the A. Morris Printing Office in Richmond, from where he enlisted as 3rd Corporal of Company "K", 3rd Regiment, Richmond Local Defense Troops. He served until at least August 1864. In 1864 he was given a Certificate of Disability for "Nephritis" and "Excessive Stammering."

He never married, and died age 44 at 2414 Venable Street of "Apoplexy," per Cemetery records. His grave in the Stewart/Wilkes plot was marked in February 2018 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
