Marie (York) Stair passed away of natural causes at home in Vancouver, Washington on December 20, 2014 at the age of 83.

She was the second of eight children born to Willie and Ethel (Martin) York in a small cabin in the isolated Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. She had a happy, story-filled life growing up with no modern conveniences and very few material possessions - but with lots of love from her big extended family. She attended school through the tenth grade, often missing weeks at a time to help her family sharecrop in the hot Arkansas and Oklahoma cotton fields.

She loved to attend old-time brush arbor revivals and square dances where her father and uncles played the fiddle and other bluegrass instruments.

Marie married Calvin Stair when he returned home from the Philippines after World War II. Marie was 16 and Calvin was 21. They moved to Vancouver, Washington in 1948 where Marie was a stay-at-home wife and mother, often babysitting for other young children. Eventually, she went to work in the kitchen at the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver, Washington and then earned her GED so she could be a Houseparent. She retired after 20 years to be a stay-at-home grandma.

Marie enjoyed her trips to Arkansas and the much anticipated visits her Arkansas family made to see her. She liked riding her bike to garage sales, word puzzles, reading, quilting, visiting with others out on her big front porch, discussing politics with her children, and listening to old-time country, bluegrass, and gospel music.

Marie is survived by her four children: Dale Stair, Phyllis DeLano (Raymond), Karen Dahl, and Darrell Stair; granddaughter, Audrey Dahl; sisters, Martha Sutton, Dorothy King, and Shirley West; an uncle, Irwin York; brothers-in-law, C.J. Cannon, Bill Allgood, Sam Pruitt, Chester King, and John West; multiple generations of nieces and nephews; and Calvin's brother, Hayden Stair (Angie); sister, Frances Gill; and sister-in-law, Trudy Stair.

She was preceded in death by Calvin, her husband of 66 years; her parents; brother, Charles York; sisters, Margaret Cannon, Anna Allgood, and Jean Pruitt; nieces, Sandra (Sutton) Smith and Teresa (York) Deckard; nephew, Randall Sutton; grandnieces, Sandra Anthony and Kristen Martin; sister-in-law, Margie York; brother-in-law, Donald Sutton; and Calvin's parents, Clyde and Fern (Cochran) Stair; brother, J.C Stair; niece, Teresa Stair; and brother-in-law, Lester Gill.

A private burial was held at Park Hill Cemetery in Vancouver, Washington, and a celebration of Marie's life was held at the home of niece, Cassie (Sutton) Murray, of Desha, Arkansas in March 2015.
