She attended school in Poughkeepsie and graduated from high school in 1948. After graduation, she attended Nurse's Training Education and became a nurse at Vassar Hospital. She continued social contact with her nursing friends through monthly luncheons. Jean was a skilled seamstress who enjoyed helping family and friends with clothing alterations and repair needs. She also had a remarkable memory and enjoyed crossword puzzles, jumbles and Jeopardy. If you forgot anything from the past, just ask her and you would get the answer. As a family, they took many vacation trips to most of the United States. She loved animals, particularly birds, and fed hummingbirds on a daily basis and supplied water and bird food continually to all birds during the winter months. She also loved music and singing.
On July 18, 1953, she married Gene D. Mentzer. They lived in Poughkeepsie, where they had their first child, Kim, in 1955. In February, 1956, they moved to the Town of Wappinger and remained there for the birth of the rest of their children, Karen, Mark, Marcia and Melanee and continued living there after all the children had departed due to marriages, etc. Besides her husband and children, Jean is survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed her presence. She was predeceased by her son, Mark Mentzer and a brother, Robert Becker.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 19th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St., Fishkill, with the funeral service taking place at 8 pm at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 21 at 10 a.m. at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
