RET HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY

Roy Eric Carlson
Roy Eric Carlson died on Nov. 14, 1995. He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather as well as a teacher, coach and mentor to so very many young athletes. He was born in Chicago in 1918 and, while attending Fenger High School, experienced his first successes as an outstanding athlete. He was recognized for his accomplishments in football and also earned State of Illinois honors in wrestling. He accepted a football scholarship to attend the University of Washington and, after two years, was offered a contract by the Philadelphia Eagles. While serving in the Navy Air Corps during World War II, he suffered injuries during an airplane accident which prevented him from completing his professional football career. After the War, Roy returned to the University of Washington to finish his college education and to coach football under Pest Welch and Howie O'Dell. His first head football coaching position was at Olympia High School where his team won the State Championship in 1953. In 1959, he joined the coaching staff at Washington State University where he also earned his Master's Degree. He was appointed Head Football Coach at Pacific Lutheran University in 1962, and during his tenure, his football teams won three NAIA District I championships and, on three occasions, his golf teams went to the NAIA Nationals. In 1964, Roy was selected as the Coach of the Year for NAIA District I and was awarded Coach of the Year honors by KIRO Sports. He was inducted into the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame and Washington Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a member of Oakbrook Golf and Country Club and Tacoma Elks. Roy is survived by Beverly, his wife of 52 years, and daughters Linda Robson of Gig Harbor and Caron Strutz and her husband, Richard, of Seattle. His beloved grandsons, Eric, Cory, Christopher and William Robson and Ian Hoyt will miss him greatly. Memories of his wonderful sense of humor, his positive and enthusiastic outlook on life, and, of course, his sage advice on golfing, boating, and fishing will remain with us always. Thanks Dad. Private graveside services were held on Saturday, November 18th. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
