Sarah Parks (12-20-14)
Posted: 21 Dec 2014 01:43 PM PST
Sarah Marcus Brewer Parks was born on October 2, 1921, in Banks County, the daughter of William Otis Brewer and Margie Patton Brewer. She was one of 6 children and attended school in Banks County. On March 23, 1940 she married John David Parks, Sr. and they lived in Athens all of their adult life, where they reared their two children. She was married to John David Parks, Sr. for 69 years until his death on March 28, 2009.

Mrs. Parks was a teacher at Hope Haven School for a number of years and loved her students. She continued to talk fondly of her special times at Hope Haven. She spent the latter part of her career in hardware business as a partner with her husband at Handy Variety Hardware in Athens. She was a talented gardener, flower arranger and artist. She became an artist at age 70 when she joined the Memory Painters of Athens. She enjoyed painting oil on canvas and acrylic on glass. Her work has been exhibited at the Lyndon House and at the UGA Center for Continuing Education.

She was an active member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school, Girls Auxiliary, and Vacation Bible School, and was a supportive parent of her children’s activities. She was a member of the Joy Sunday school class and the XYZ Club.

In retirement, she enjoyed having more time for church and family. She and her husband spent a great deal of time visiting older family members and taking care of neighbors and church members in their time of need. They have prepared many meals for friends and family in need of assistance at the time.

Her fondest moments were her time at home, in the yards and with family. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.

Mrs. Marcus Parks passed away on December 20, 2014.

Survivors include her daughter Dr. Phyllis Parks Veal and husband, Mr. Glenn A. Veal, Milledgeville; and son John David Parks, Jr. and wife, Dawn Dickinson Parks, Jefferson; grandchildren, Emily Diane Parks, John David Parks, III and wife Anna Faulkner Parks; and great-grandchilden, John David Parks IV and Nathan Sims Parks and Eleanor Joy Parks.
