In 1858 John Butterfield Jr., along with Marquis L. Kenyon of Rome, NY, selected the Overland Mail Company route and sites for the stage stations on the 2,700 mile Butterfield Trail from Tipton, Missouri, to San Francisco, California. This was the longest stagecoach line in the United States. John Jr.'s father John Sr. was president of the Overland Mail Company from September 16, 1857, to March 20, 1860. This stage line started service on the Southern Trail September 14, 1858, at ten minutes after midnight when the first stagecoach left San Francisco. John Jr. served as a senior Superintendent of the line.
