In Greenbrier
Shooting Incident
One man was killed and another
wounded Tuesday in a gunfight at the
victim's horns.
Verdie Virgus Hoke. 71. of White
Sulphur Springs, was killed and his
friend, Calvin Farley, was shot in the
arm in an episode that is still under
investigation. Police Chief Luther Stacy
said no arrests have been made, but
speculated that the two men shot each
other. Farley is in satisfactory condition
at Greenbrier Valley Hospital.
Hoke was a native of Alvon, Greenbrier
County, and a member of the
church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints in White Sulphur Springs.
Surviving: brother, Lawrence A. of
White Sulphur Springs; sisters. Mrs.
Lola L. Webb, Mrs. Hilda K. Miller and
Miss Verna Hoke, all of White Sulphur
Springs; stepson, Paul Burdette, also of
White Sulpher Springs.
Shanklin Funeral Home. White Sulphur
Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Services for Mr. Verdie Virgus Hoke, 71, will
be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Church of Jesus
Christ Latter Day Saints in White Sulphur
Springs with the Rev. Billy Webb officiating.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery at White
Sulphur Springs.
' Mr. Hoke was shot and killed by Calvin
Farley1 at his home Tuesday, White Sulphur
Springs city police said.
Police said Hoke and Farley, 33, of
Lewisburg apparently quarreled and the pair
exchanged gun fire. Police said Hoke was
shot in the stomach with a .12 gauge shotgun
and Farley was wounded in the arm with a
.22 caliber pistol. Police said Farley was
listed in satisfactory condition at Greenbrler
Valley Hospital in Fairlea Wednesday.
No charges nave been filed, however,
police said the investigation is continuing.
Born June 26.1906, at Alvon, he was a son
of the late Alihue and Llllle Fury Hoke.
Mr. Hoke was a member of the Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints "
His wife, Audrey Burdette Hoke, died Jan.
3, 1975.
Survivors Include one brother, Lawrance
A. Hoke; three sisters, Mrs. Lola Webb, Mrs.
Hilda Miller and Verna Hoke, and one
stepson, Paul Burdette, all of White Sulphur
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday
at Shanklin Funeral Home in White
Sulphur Springs and at the church one hour
prior to services.
