O'Keefe, W. Patrick, Jr, 70, of Santa Ana, passed away November 2, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 15-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Born May 18, 1938 in Foxhome, Minnesota, Patrick graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1956. Soon after, he packed his belongings and headed west. He then proudly became a member of the US Marine Corps. After earning a degree in economics from Cal State Fullerton in 1962, he received his Juris Doctorate from USC Law School in 1967. In 1968, Patrick was admitted into the State Bar Association of California and in 1971 began his private practice in Orange County, specializing in general business, real estate, and estate planning. During his 40-year career, Patrick dedicated countless volunteer hours serving on numerous committees to improve access to justice and professionalism in the practice of law. Such committees include the Board of Directors of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA), the State Bar Committee on Corporations (in which he participated in the drafting of the revised Corporation Code), and the OCBA Client Relations, to name only a few. He served as chairman of the OCBA Delegation of the State Bar Conference of Delegates, the OCBA Business Litigation Section, the Unauthorized Practice Committee, the Mandatory Fee Association, and the Committee on the Administration of Justice. During his term as president of the Orange County Barristers, he initiated the Bridging the Gap Program. He was a co-founder and Master Bencher of the William P. Gray Legion Lex American Inns of Court, and the President of the USC Law School Legion Lex, OC Chapter. He also served as Judge Pro Tem of the OC Superior Court since 1987. In 2002, Patrick was the recipient of the prestigious Harmon G. Scoville Award, which honors a member of the Orange County legal community who "exemplifies the highest standards of the legal profession and who has contributed significantly to the Orange County Bar Association". Patrick was an avid skier. He was a member of the Balboa Ski and Sports Club, and skied the slopes from Mammoth to Switerzland with great zeal. He took pride in taking care of his beautiful home, and making sure that his daughters and wife wanted for nothing. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He also never missed an annual Marine Corps Birthday Dinner, truly enjoying the camaraderie and , of course, the S.O.S. Patrick will be best remembered as a man of generous good humor, unassailable ethics, and uncompromising dignity. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Eva; daughters, Erin O'Keefe Levi of Sacramento, CA and Abbey Carbone of Woburn, MA; sons-in-law, Steven Carbone and Greg Levi; grandchildren, James, Lauren and Gary Levi, and Ava, Charles, and Weston Patrick Carbone; sisters, Irene Hanson of El Cajon, CA and Cathy Rydell of Wahpeton, ND; brother, Mike O'Keefe of Morris, MN, and numerous relatives and friends.
