First Families of Tennessee. Elias was buried next to Popular Creek where North America’s largest water tower once stood at the now decommissioned K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The headstones were missing before the Manhattan Project. Snyder Roberts verified the existence of the cemetery in his writings. TVA also marked the cemetery on the Watts Bar impoundment maps in the 1930’s. DOE recognized the existence of the cemetery in 2013. There is no documentation proof of Elias's birth date. It has been discovered recently he was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Elias joined Colonel Nathaniel Gist’s Regiments of Continental Army Rangers in May of 1777 and fought in the defense of Philadelphia in the battles of Monmouth and Brandywine in 1777. Colonel Gist’s Regiments of Rangers were ordered to the defense of Charleston, SC in 1780 where Elias was on a grand jury list in Buford District later that summer. He married Rebecca Brashears in 1786 in Pendleton District, South Carolina. They moved to what is now Roane County, Tennessee in 1793.
