INDIANOLA HERALD, Indianola Iowa, 27 April 1893, p. 3, column 5, Norwalk, "Quite a number went from here to Dallas Center to attend the funeral of Mrs. Emery Clary; among them was Mother Hartly, one of the oldest settlers here."
INDIANOLA HERALD, Indianola Iowa, 1 May 1893, p. 3, column 4, In Memory, From the Dallas Center Times, "Mrs. Philena G. Clary was born Sept. 10, 1845, in Illinois. Her father's name was A. G. Hartley, the family moved to Warren Co., Iowa when she was a child. She was married to Mr. E. R. Clary, Nov. 30, 1865. — Rev. Mr. Wright's remarks at the funeral were in part as follows: — Our departed sister weas 'born again by the Spirit' into the Kingdom of our blessed and anointed Savior when young and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. For over thirty years of her earthly life she 'witnessed the Good Confession.' She came with her husband to Dallas Center about fifteen years ago and gave in her certificate of membership to the church, of her choice. In this place her zeal for Christ, her effort for the cause of God, her loyalty to the church and consistency of Christian life and character are known to you all. — The disease that caused her death dates back in its beginning about five years. At first distressing, yet not alarming but increasing in its severity and painfulness affecting finally the entire physical and nervous organism and excluding the hope of restored health. — For the past nine months she was confined to her room and bed, and often through extreme physical and nervous suffering unable to receive the many kind friends who were ever ready and anxious to offer their sympathizing aid. — The funeral services on Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church were attended by a large number of friends who testified by their presence, their tears and their floral offerings to the love and esteem in which they held their departed sister and friend. The interment took place at the Masonic Cemetery. — The Times tenders to the husband and son the sympathies of the community. — [The Times does not state date of death but we presume it was about May 1 — Ed. Herald.]
