DALE, Joseph, born 12 Apr 1792 in Georgetown, Woodford, Kentucky; orphaned at the age of seven; moved to Brookville, Franklin, Indiana Territory with his brother Alexander about 1806; worked for his brother Alexander in the distillery business; married Mary Ann Bradburn 9 Jun 1814 in Franklin County; settled on a frontier home in Harrison, Fayette, Indiana; cleared his land and developed a farm; built a distillery on his farm; traded with Native Americans and engaged in merchandising; had his son Woodford kidnapped by a Native American woman but quickly recovered him; appointed inspector of elections for Harrison Township in 1819; proprietor of the village of Bentonville in Fayette County at the time it was surveyed 7 Dec 1838; served as a County Commissioner for Fayette County, Dec 1852–Sep 1859; member of the Baptist church; said to be an enterprising and public-spirited citizen, who was esteemed by all who knew him; considered one of the most influential men in Fayette County; died 26 Aug 1862, probably in Harrison Township; interment in Lick Creek Cemetery in Harrison Township.
