Chester Arthur May, age 85, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away of a lengthy illness on April 8, 2002.

He was born on March 8, 1917, in Union Springs, Ala. Mr. May was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Arthur May and Susie Eidson May; and son-in-law, Robert Sisson.

His memories will forever be cherished by his wife of 62 years, Emily Showalter May; four daughters, Suzanna Alexander and husband Lawrence, Sandy Sisson, Ginger Fox and Joy May-Sparks and husband Guy; nine grandchildren, Scott and Todd Hilbers, Kevin Sisson, Emily Simon, Betsy, Charles and Ann Fox, Zachary and Jesse Sparks; and three great-grandsons, Quinn Sisson, Duncan Hilbers and Bobby Simon.
He is also survived by his brother, Dr. James W. May and wife Gene of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends, all who were privileged to have known him. As a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law, and friend, his admirable qualities will be passed on to all.

Chester May attended Marion Military Academy in Marion, Ala., and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta in 1938. After graduating from Emory he was area supervisor of the National Youth Administration in Clarksville, Gainesville, and Savannah, Ga.
Serving in World War II with the amphibious forces in England, he retired as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, receiving a letter of commendation from the commanding officer of the U.S. Naval Forces, and he remained active with the Naval Reserves for many years.

Following the war, he began his own business, the C.A. May Marine Supply Co. in Decatur, Ga. Upon retiring from the business in 1976, he settled in Freeport, Fla., for many happy years before moving to Niceville, Fla., and then to Fort Walton Beach.

All of his life, Chester May was an active member of the Methodist Church, most recently with the Shalimar United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at Shalimar United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 20, at 4 p.m.

As Chester May loved His Lord, the family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shalimar United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 795, Shalimar, FL 32579.
