Charles Orven DePuy



Charles Orven Depuy, longtime resident of Ponca City, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, in Tonkawa, after a brief bout with cancer. He was 84.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Taylor, officiating.

There will be a family visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, at Trout Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.

Charles was born on Jan. 18, 1930, the son of Chauncey Mitchell DePuy and Hedwig Hattie Louise Boehm in Rio, Wis., where he was raised on a dairy farm.

In 1949 he graduated from Rio High School where he played basketball, baseball and football.

After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and went into the “seabees” and was stationed in Puerto Rico and Rhode Island until 1953 when he was honorably discharged.

He married Joy L. Harris on April 19, 1952, in Rio, Wis. They were happily married for 51 wonderful years.

In 1955 they moved to Oklahoma and Charles was a successful TG&Y manager of stores in New Iberia, La; Tulsa and Ponca City for 29 years. When he worked at McLan Village TG&Y he would go to the high school and speak to the business clubs about being successful in business and life. He loved working with the associates and the public. Many who became lifelong friends.

After retiring from TG&Y he worked at Bowker Ford for a year before purchasing two True Value hardware stores, one in Neosho, Mo., and one in Ponca City which were operated with his two sons, Derek and Corey.

Joy and Charles were able to travel in their motor home to all the states and Canada with friends and family and their co-pilot “Pepe” the chihuahua. Over the years Charles had seven airplanes. He enjoyed spending time at the airport working on planes and flying with the many friends he made there.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for many years. He was past president of Kiwanis for 18 years. Active with the Ponca City Aviation Booster Club and Tippers Club.

Charles was a loving father to his three children by supporting their many church, school and sports activities. He loved adventures, whether traveling, hunting, fishing or just a family day at home. He will be truly missed by loved ones and the many friends he made.

The last eight years he lived with his son Derek in a house out in the country which he dearly loved. He relaxed out on the porch watching the dogs, chickens and squirrels in a peaceful setting.

He is survived by his daughter, Ronda Vest, of Salina, Okla.; sons, Derek Depuy, of Tonkawa; and Corey Depuy of Neosho, Mo.; sister, Phyllis Gorman, of Pardeeville, Wis.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Staci Selmon, Lori Meadows, Kalon Vest, Erin Depuy, Tori Depuy and Andrew Depuy; and by five great-grandchildren with three more on the way.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy; twin sons, Jerry Gene and Jay Charles Depuy; son, Charles “Mitchell” Depuy; and his parents.

He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Dolores Sharpee and Joan Hawkos.

Casket bearers will be Dennis Beets, Buck Vest, Trey Selmon, Steve McGuire, Tom Vest and Leo Schmidtlein.

Honorary casket bearers will be Jim Bowan, Merle Helt, David Kincaid, Burt Blanton and Bruce Eberly.
