Darrell attended Wake Forest University and graduated from Furman University. He was a World War II veteran and worked for 33 years as a manager at Lockheed Georgia Aircraft in Marietta, GA.

He was active as a lay preacher in the Baptist church and ordained a deacon in 1947 in First Baptist Church, Salisbury. He subsequently served as a deacon in three other Baptist churches. He was on the Marietta City Board of Education for 14 years, chair for two terms, and was active in several other civic organizations. At the age of 52, he earned a Masters in Educational Administration from Georgia State University.

Survived by his son Darrell “Davis” Perkins, Jr. (wife Ying Perkins) of Ossining, NY; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren and his loving companion, Sadie T. Shannon. He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Josephine K. Perkins, and daughter, Sharon Hope Perkins Challis.
