All seven of his children were living and celebrated his 100th birthday. Several relatives outside of the immediate family were there along with local friends and neighbors called all that week.

The family cared for Walter until after his 100th birthday. In August after his 100th birthday, he entered the Shoshone Nursing Home. He was not unhappy there. He knew many of the residents and family members visited often.
