A younger daughter of William Gregory of Kentucky by his wife, Jane 'Jennie' Barnes of Ohio, her father died before the year 1900. In the census of that year, Viola was living with her widowed mother and most of her siblings in Louisville.
She married Hardin County native Charles Garrett Marshal at Louisville on 28 Feb 1911, and afterwards resided with him at Elizabethtown, where both of their children were born.
By 1930, the family had returned to Louisville where her husband found employment at the Bourbon Stock Yards. Later, Viola's children Charlotte and William both worked there as well.
