Shirley Jean Abraham Alter-Derflinger
Shirley Jean Derflinger, 68, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at her residence following an eight month illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Kevin Lee and Tom Lovan officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Eric Spake officiating, all at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Derflinger was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Spink Township, South Dakota, the daughter of Roy and Sarah Marie (Somervold) Abraham. She grew up on the family farm near Spink, S.D. She graduated from Alcester (S.D.) High School and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. She taught in rural Union County, S.D., before her marriage.

She married Gerald Gene Alter on Nov. 25, 1955, in Burle Creek, S.D. He died April 29, 1976, in Sioux City. She married Robert Derflinger on Aug. 1, 1981, in Sioux City.

She came to Sioux City in 1957. She taught school in South Sioux City, then went back to school after Gerald's death. She received a degree in library science and secondary education from Morningside College. She was the librarian for Woodbury Central in Moville, Iowa, for 10 years, then retired.

She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and a former president of the Lutheran Brotherhood Association. She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the church choir. She was the voluntary wedding coordinator at Morningside Lutheran for 25 years, helping with over 700 weddings.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Sioux City; three sons, Gene Ronald Alter of Oak Harbor, Wash., Curtis Dean Alter of Spink, S.D., and Gregory Gerald Alter of Sergeant Bluff; four daughters, Cynthia Marie Alter of Sioux City, Linda Suedkamp and her husband, Richard, of Minot, N.D., Terri Monroe and her husband, Gary, of Sioux City and Diane Ware and her husband, Charlie, of Louisberg, Kan.; two brothers and their wives, Donald and Mary Abraham of Elk Point, S.D., and Robert and Marilyn Abraham of Alcester, S.D.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, Gerald, she was also preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers will be Jake and Tony Monroe, Chad McCormick, Gerald Chartier and David and Ross Abraham.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the Roy Abraham Scholarship Fund.
