Alverta Irene Bennett Carter, 93, formerly of Transue, PA, went home to be with the Lord and Savior Monday, Feb. 10, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Tunkhannock, PA surrounded by her loving family. Alverta had been a resident at the Golden Living Center since December 2008. While there she made many friends with the caring and loving staff and came to regard them as her extended family. She was born on March 11, 1919 in Skinners Eddy, PA. She was the daughter of the late Howard I. and Lena LaFrance Bennett. Some of her fondest school years memories were when she attended the Spring Hill School and Camptown High School where she made many friends and had great admiration for her teachers during those years. She married the late Richard Curtis Bennett in 1937 and they resided on the family farm on Clapper Hill for 10 years. They then moved to Skinners Eddy where they together established the Bennett 2 Way Panel Saw business, which had worldwide sales until it was sold to Black & Decker Corp. The Bennett 2 Way Panel Saw is still in use today in many building supply stores. Alverta also was employed at Bendix of South Montrose, for several years. Richard passed away in 1967 after 30 years of marriage. Her lifelong interests were family and genealogy. She loved to travel, as well as, feed the birds and raise flowers. Alverta genuinely cared about the needs of others and over her long life did many unknown acts of kindness. Whatever her many interests were she did them with great enthusiasm. Surviving are: her daughter Charlotte Bennett Place and her husband, Richard of Transue; daughter-in-law, Nancy Jayne Bennett of Crow Hill; six grandchildren, Charlotte Rene Brigham (Randy) of Laceyville, Constance Ruth Patterson (Charles) of Glen Rock, Carol Rae Mallory of Uvalde, TX, Adam Calvin Bennett (Christian) of Sayre, Lyle Grady Place of Transue and Jesse Curtis Place (Toni) of Meshoppen. Also surviving are 13 greatgrandchildren and three greatgreat grandchildren. She loved and adored each and every one of them and was always very interested in every aspect of his/her lives. Alverta’s two surviving sisters are Myrna Stevens of Westfield, MA and Evangeline Tannenbaum of Wallingford, CT plus several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Calvin Bennett in 2009; three brothers, Delos, Keith and Freeman Bennett and her husband, Earl K. Carter, who passed away in 2000. A quiet graveside service was attended by her family on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Beaver Meadows Cemetery on Clapper Hill, with Rev. Thomas Davis of the Braintrim Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements were made through Sheldon Funeral Homes, Main St., Laceyville. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial donations may do so in Alverta’s name to the Braintrim Baptist Church Library, PO Box 281, Laceyville, PA 18623.
