Son of David Rattray & Helen Jamieson
Married Adelina Perchard 18 Sep 1854 St. Saviour, Jersey

David Rattray Sr., builder of Bramblebank Mill erected in about 1833 in Rattray, Scotland, died in 1850. His son, David, Jr. (Born, Dundee 1820), is listed as the proprietor of the mill in 1852. In July 1854, David Rattray, Jr. lived in Lisieux, France and sold his interest in the mill (National Archives of Scotland, September 5, 1854).

In September 1854, David listed his occupation as flaxspinner, on his marriage certificate (Parish of St. Saviour, Jersey, UK)

David and his wife Adelina , nee Perchard (Born 1834 St Helier, Jersey UK), lived in Lisieux, France where David owned a pattern shop and where their children were born (E.C. Leal's letter to his daughters).

They moved to Dundee, Scotland shortly after their daughter Ethyl was born in 1875.

28 Oct 1876 David and Adelina sold some rentes they had inherited (from Adelina's family) to Adelina's elder brother Clement, the principal heir (this was common practice). They acted through their 'Procureur', Pierre Philippe Guiton, which fits in with their being out of the island. Pierre was probably Adelina's uncle Pierre. (from Jane Martin research in land Registry livre 264 folio 5, email dated Nov 2005)

On the marriage certificate of their daughter, Adelina Jane, in 1880 in Dundee, Scotland, David's occupation is listed as jute merchant, and the family lived in Dundee on 113 Broughty Ferry Road.

In his Will dated February 18, 1880, David said that he is lately a spinner in Lille (France) and now a merchant in Dundee.
In the census of 1881, two years later, David still lived in Dundee with his family on Ferry Road, and his profession is listed as linen merchant.

David Rattray, Jr. sometime in 1882 came to Martin Co, Minnesota. He purchased 600 acres in June 1882 ; the Isaac Kendall farm near Cedarville, Martin, Minnesota. Construction on a family home was begun and would be finished before winter for the arrival of Adelina and the children. The home would be large enough for his whole family.

Adelina, Helen, John, and Ethel arrived on the "Anchoria" in New York Oct. 4, 1882 from Glasgow, Scotland. No record of David's arrival has been found yet (2009). (In the Martin Co Sentinel of Oct. 6, 1882, it states "Mr. Davis of Fairmont has about completed an elegant and commodious residence for Mr. Rattray, on the eastern shore of Cedar Lake. Mr. Rattray is expecting his family very soon, and thinks more of his friends will locate near.")

David's obituary in the Martin County Sentinel on March 20, 1885 said that he immigrated to the US in June, 1882 and that he bought a farm near Cedarville (Cedar Township), Martin County, Minnesota. He died there on March 15, 1885, at age 65. Services were held at the Congregational church in Fairmont.

After David died Adelina and her daughters went back to Scotland; they returned to Lakeview 1887. Sometime before 1888 the family left Lakeview and went to live in St. Paul, Minnesota. They moved to Santa Cruz, California from St. Paul in about 1890 and then on to San Francisco. Martin County land records state that Adelina sold the farm in Minnesota in July 1891, she was in California at that time.

Adelina moved to Chicago shortly after her daughter Adelina Jane arrived in San Francisco with her family from New Zealand after the death of her husband E.C. Leal in 1896. Most members of the family were included in the 1900 Illinois Census. Adelina died in 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska where she was living with her daughter Ethel.
