Mary Lou Werkheiser, 79, of Sturgeon Bay, was called Home Friday morning, December 5, 2014, at Ministry Door County Medical Center.
She was born May 24, 1935, on the family farm in the Town of Egg Harbor, a twin daughter of the late Fred and Hilda (Stoeger) Vertz. Mary Lou graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1953. After high school, she worked as a receptionist for WOKW.
On July 14, 1956, Mary Lou was united in marriage to Wayne Frederick Werkheiser at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Egg Harbor. They moved to Washington State and lived there until Wayne’s military tour of duty was finished at which time they returned home to Door County. Upon their return, Mary Lou worked part-time at the Mill Supper Club. Not long after moving back, Wayne’s father passed away, and they moved to the Werkheiser Farm, operating the farm as a family, all while Wayne was working full-time at the shipyard and Mary Lou at the Mill. Mary Lou had suffered through four bouts of cancer since 1990.
She was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute, its Christian Mothers, and the Royal Neighbors.
Mary Lou was a sports fan who enjoyed watching the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers, but she was the biggest fan of her grandchildren and cherished the time she spent with them, cheering them on at all of their sporting events. She also loved knitting…"Lots of knitting."
Mom was our hero – strong, determined, and kindhearted, with a strong Christian faith. She was always smiling, even while she was very sick and hurting. Never complaining, worried about others, welcoming with a soft and tender heart.
Mary Lou will be deeply missed by her husband, Wayne; three children, Deb (Doug) Krauel of Egg Harbor, Dan (Carla) of Green Bay, Dawn (James) Englebert of Sturgeon Bay; eight grandchildren, Travis (fiancé, Kelly Fehl) Krauel, Trent (Kelsey) Krauel, Justin Englebert, Amber Englebert, Amy Lou Englebert, Jordan Englebert, Tamera Werkheiser, and Danielle Werkheiser; two great-grandsons, Dominic and Kevin Krauel; her twin sister, Marilyn Anschutz of Egg Harbor; and nieces and nephews .
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Diane Marie Werkheiser; one brother, Cyril Vertz; sister, Mercedes Williams; and her dear nieces and nephews..
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Mary Lou will be laid to rest in the church cemetery following the Mass.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, at HUEHNS Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and again, Tuesday morning, at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
