Obituary
"Matriarch of Black Forest" Passes On
Ruth Esther Hogan departed this life while asleep in her home in Black Forest on 0200 on December 28, 2013. Ruth and her family became residents of Black Forest in the summer of 1967. She was 91.5 years upon her passing. When she was 90 she was honored for being the oldest and the longest residing community member of Black Forest.

Ruth was active for many years serving, as well as fighting for, our community needs and interests. She worked to help publish the "Black Forest News" for several years. Ruth served over ten years as a Civil Servant in the finance offices of several military installations.

While serving as "Chief of Officer Payroll" at Harmon Air Field on Guam in 1947-1948 she met the "Sweetheart of her life" whom she referred to as "Hogan". (On payday she would call out payee last names and hand them their checks. The name stuck.) Ruth was one of 12 women on a base of 4,000 men. Just weeks after their return to the United States, Ruth married her Army Air Corps/USAF Bomber/Carrier Pilot, Walter A. Hogan, on October 23, 1948 in Denver, Colorado. They were married until his death on December 30, 2007. Ruth and Walt's wishes were always to "pass" in the home Ruth designed and they built together. Their wishes came true.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her two daughters, Linda L. H. Smith and Susan JoAnn Taylor; stepson, Roger W. Hogan; grandson Kyle Taylor, granddaughters, Kelli Smith and Kate Smith, great grandsons, Sage and Orion Crawford; nephew, Carl R. Johnson, Jr.; and her Swedish cousins living in Sweden, Per, Dan and Kent Lydell.

Her Memorial Service and "Celebration of Life" will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 11:00 am at The Black Forest Community Center, 12530 Black Forest Rd.; with the Rev, Bill McDonald officiating.

Her family requests, that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her honor to the Wild Blue Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, www.wbars.org.
