Lester J. Anthony
Lester J. Anthony, 78, of 10800 Old Bellevue Rd., Battle Creek, died April 4 at his home following a long illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Court-Putnam Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl G. Burgess of Faith Assembly of God, Battle Creek, officiating. Interment will be at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Good Samaritan Hospice Care and Visiting Nurse Services. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Mr. Anthony was born in Butler, Ind., March 9, 1904, son of Milton and Nellie (Grogg) Anthony. He married Olivine E. Lawton in 1924 and she preceded him in death in 1972. Mr. Anthony came to Michigan as a 14-year-old by wagon team and a Model-T, driving cattle by foot, from the railhead in Coldwater to the Michigan family farm two miles west of Girard. At the time of his marriage, he was working at the Coldwater State Children's Home. In 1928, he moved to Battle Creek, working as a sheetmetal worker and boilermaker for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, retiring after 44 years of service. He farmed the last 45 years of his life, while raising seven children.
Surviving are sons Paul L., Albert L. and Clair J., all of Battle Creek; daughters, Jeanette L. Andrus of Hastings, Lucille M. Binger of Gaston, Ore., and Marilyn Callahan of Battle Creek; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Anthony of Tekonsha and Ralph Anthony of Coldwater; and two sisters, Gertrude Anthony of Battle Creek and Ruth Hammerman of Coldwater. A son, Jarry, was killed in a 1958 automobile accident.
