The light in Melissa's eyes went out on June 18, 2005. That was the day her 15-month-old baby boy died. On April 15, the light came back into Melissa's eyes when she ran through heaven's gates to hold her precious baby boy once again.

Melissa was born in the early hours of Dec. 12, 1983 in West Covina, Calif., to Arsenio and Joan Romero just two minutes before her twin brother, Thomas Aaron. She grew to be a beautiful, smart and loving person. She was always a good mother to others' children even before having any of her own children. The day she found out she was pregnant with her own baby, her world changed. She and Eric were ready to start a life together with their soon-to-be baby boy. Then, one year later, their family was blessed with the birth of their baby girl, Mariah. Melissa had the beginnings of the family she had always dreamed of. She and Eric wanted to have four children to make their family complete. The dreams they had for their baby boy were shattered when he drowned.

Now the family they dreamed of is destroyed because the mother was taken before her time by someone who had no regard for life. Melissa wanted to see her baby girl walk. She wanted to hear her say Mommy. But someone took those dreams away from her at the tender age of 22. They took her life when they cowardly shot her in a drive-by shooting as she slept in her own home in Roswell at 3 a.m. Saturday morning. This family will forever be incomplete because of one foolish act. Love started this family and love will carry this family until the day they are all joined together again.

Melissa had been attending college since her first pregnancy to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a pediatric nurse. Her promise to her children was a good life. Melissa's dreams and promise would have come true because she was doing everything in her power to fulfill them, even after the death of her son.

Melissa was preceded in death by her father, Arsenio Romero; step-father, Max Young; brother-in-law, Bobby Ray Contreras Jr; and the sunshine of her life, her baby boy, Eric Robert Contreras, Jr.

She is survived by her one year old daughter, Mariah Contreras; fiance, Eric Contreras; mother and step-father, Joan and Tom Hughes; twin brother, Thomas Romero; brother, Anthony Romero, and his fiance, Teala; sister, Amber Smith, and husband, Ray; step-brother, Nicholas Hughes and wife, Tammy; nephew, KeShawn Smith; and niece, Tylie Romero.

A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, April 18, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. A final visitation will be held at Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday April 19, at 1:30 p.m. followed with a funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.
