Ansgar was born in 801 in France to German parents. He was educated at Corbie and sent to the monastery of Corvey on the River Wesser.
When Danish King Harold asked for missionaries, he volunteer to go to Denmark, joining Rimbert on the pilgrimage. He escorted Harald I from exile back to Jutland, converted Erik, King of Jutland, and was known as a preacher, miracle worker, and fought the slavery prevalent in Germany.
Canonized by Pope Nicholas I, his feast day is February 3rd.
Relics are at Bremen and Hamburg in Germany, and Copenhagen, Denmark.
