Husband for 26 years of Lenore D. (Moreau) Mercurio. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Mary (Vinagro) Mercurio.
Joe worked for the Providence Gas Company for 37 years retiring as a supervisor in 2001. For the past ten years Joe was fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease. He and his wife Lenore were honored in May 2010 by the ALS Association's RI Chapter for spreading awareness of and raising funds for fighting this disease.
Survivors include his wife; he was the father of Amy M. Aquino and her husband Armando, and James J. Collins, all of Scituate.
Grandfather of Alex, Emily, Joey and Lea; and brother of Geraldine Riccio and her husband Joseph of North Providence.
Funeral and burial private.
