Louise Sylvia Carlson Anderson of Irvine, CA, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2011, in the evening. She was 98 years old, and was born in Des Moines, Polk County, IA to Anton and Minnie Carlson on March 3, 1913. Her two younger brothers were Harry and Warren. At age 13, nine months after being orphaned, she and her brothers were adopted by Florence and Nellie Nelson of Dayton, Webster County, IA. There she flourished, mastering the arts of piano, drums, voice and singing as well as tri-state declamatory contests. She was a lifelong lover of books and learning. The new family’s summer travels included road trips in the Hudson to WI, MN, CO, NY and Washington, D.C. Shortly before graduating from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, she became engaged to Carl Borg Anderson also of Dayton, Webster County, IA. She held one-year Iowa teaching positions in Attica, Otho and Gowrie until Carl received his Doctorate degree. Soon after their July 14, 1938 marriage in Dayton, they moved to Salt Lake City, UT, where Carl began his professional career. Four years and one daughter later, the family moved to Berkeley, CA, where a second daughter and a son were born. In 1951, the family moved to Pasadena, CA and on to San Francisco in 1963, the realization of a lifelong dream. When Carl passed on in 1964, Louise returned to Pasadena where she resumed her career as an educator. She began summer travels to Hawaii, U. S. Virgin Islands, and the American Southwest. Upon her retirement in 1978, she moved to the Westside of Los Angeles and continued her travels to Europe, the islands, and later in life the Central Coast of California. In 1989, she moved to her final home of 22 years on a hillside of Irvine, CA. There she spent happy days gardening and reading, and leisurely evenings on the patio enjoying her beloved beagles, her rose garden and a lovely view. A woman of sharp intellect and good humor, she possessed a splendid smile. Her sensibilities will be remembered and cherished by all who knew and loved her. A superb and loving mother, she is survived by three children, Carol Yokum, Connie Anderson, and Doug Anderson; 4 grandsons; and 10 great-grandchildren.
