Arthur William Regelous, popularly known as Peter, died in a fire at 423 Hackney Road on the night of April 19th/20th 1902 trying to save the lives of the occupants, Mrs Alice Maud Denman and her four children, all of whom were killed. The tragedy had a great impact on the area and the funerals of the victims were attended by massed crowds. A fund was set up by the Mayor of Bethnal Green 'in aid of the sufferers by the fire'(1) to which the Princess of Wales contributed a cheque for £10, and the memorial drinking fountain, with commemorative plaque, was erected the following year, in 1903.
