Preceeding her in death were her parents; four sisters, Christine McKinnon, Zeffie (Ergle) Mullen, Ruby (Bo) Johnson, and Alice (Bob) Childs; and four brothers, Newport McKinnon, Jesse (Esther) McKinnon, Gordon (Lillie Mae McKinnon) McKinnon, and Corbin (Meriam) McKinnon.
Survivors include her husband, of 64 years, Wendell Barbaree of El Dorado, Arkansas; two sons, Rev. Gary (Lynn) Barbaree of Pasadena, California and David Barbaree of Modesto, California. Also, surviving Joy are her three grandchildren, Erin (Juan) Miranda of San Francisco, California, Conner Barbaree of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Caitlin Barbaree of San Francisco, California; and one special great-grandchild, Elisha Barbaree of San Francisco, California; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Joy was a graduate of Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, Tennessee. She married Wendell June 23, 1945.
She worked in rural mission work in Arkansas, worked with migrant workers in Modesto, California, and taught in public schools of Arkansas and California for 36 years. After retiring from teaching school, she worked with Habitat for Humanity and was a co-founder of the first chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Arkansas. She also volunteered in missions in Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky, serving in capacities too numerous to list. She was devoted to God, the Church, Wendell, her family and her many friends.
