Army Spc. Medina was assigned to 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas, as a cannon crewmember. Medina was traveling in a convoy when it struck an improvised explosive device. Irving's family moved from Mexico City to Middletown, N.Y., when he was 6. He attended Goshen High School where he played varsity soccer and graduated in 1999. He later taught local children through a program at Orange County Community College where he was studying. One day Irving came home and told his family that he needed money to pay for college to become an accountant, so he joined the Army in September 2001 and was sent to Iraq last April. Irving loved kids, soccer, the Chicago Bulls, the New York Yankees and the San Francisco 49ers.
