son of Thomas & Martha Hammons; attended Arkansas public schools; came to the Whitefield community with his father in the early 1880's; farmer cattleman and breeder of fine horses; owned the first registered Morgen stallion in Haskell County; a highly respected resident of the town of Whitefield from 1910 to 1920 then moved to his stock farm less than two miles south of the town; partner for a time with Dr. Culbertson and W.W. Nelson in the Whitefield Trading Company; active in the Whitefield Methodist Church, he and his wife conveyed to the church on 10-2-1914 all of Lots 5 and 6 of Block 3, Town of Whitefield; Democrat; served with distinction as commissioner for the Western District of Haskell County 1912-1916; married at Whitefield, I.T. on 4-3-1891 to Miss Katie Nelson; Rev. E.M. Beal officiated at the wedding and signed the marriage certificate. They had six children: Pearl, Edgar, Claud, James, Ethel and Gladys.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday for William F. Hammons, 87, former Stigler resident who died Friday night in Ada. Reverend Gordon Spencer will officiate in services at the First Methodist Church in Stigler. Burial in Stigler Cemetery was directed by Mallory Funeral Home. Hammons, who was born October 18, 1887 was a State Highway department employee from 1925 to 1939.
Survivors include two sons, Edgar of El Reno, and J. W. of Wister; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Belew, Ada, Mrs. Ethyl Gay and Mrs. Ed Mathis, both of Burbank, California; and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Wallace, Stigler and Mrs. Ed Barnes, Cordell.
