Margot Eliza Dowling, 72, of Bloomington, died Saturday at Bloomington Convalescent Center.

Born July 5, 1921, in Tangier, Morroco, she was the daughter of James S. and Rachael (Sicsu) Souers.

She taught French at Bloomington High School from 1944 to 1945, taught at University High School and Bloomington High School North where she was chairman of the foreign language department and was instrumental in 1977 in establishing a program for Spanish, French and German exchange students at Bloomington North. She served as chairman of Indiana Modern Language Association in 1968.

She served as the first coordinator for Lions Club High School Exchange Club, as coordinator of the Indiana University Honors Program for high school students, served as chairperson of the American Association of Teachers of French for three years, was consultant to the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Students Programs at IU and taught French to Peace Corps trainees at IU.

She was the recipient of the Chevalier dans L’Ordre des Palmes Academiques awarded by the French government’s Ministry of Education for teaching French in the United States.

She was a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign language, Central States Foreign Language and Indiana Foreign Language associations, American Association of Teachers of French, National Association for Foreign Students Affairs which was founded by her husband, University Women’s Club, Daughters of Isabella and St. Charles Catholic Church.

Survivors include four sons, Steven James Dowling of Bloomington, Gerald Lee "Jerry" Dowling of Houston, Texas, Mark Frederick Dowling of Tempe, Ariz., and Keith Eric Dowling of Missoula, Mont.; one daughter, Marianne Faubion of Indianapolis; one brother, Bernard Souers of Beech Grove; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Leo R. Dowling, one son, Frederick John Dowling, and one daughter, Kathleen Dowling.
