married to Barbara Stewart his beautiful wife.Lloyd “Gordon” Stewart, 94, native of Bakersfield, CA passed away March 17, 2018 in Salt Lake City, UT.
Gordon was born December 16, 1923 in Long Beach, CA, son of Lloyd Hiram Stewart and Juanita Dillon. He lived the first part of his life going between Bell, CA and Springville, CA before settling down in Bakersfield, CA. He spent the last eight years in Magna, UT where he was closer to family.
On May 8, 1948 Gordon married the love of his life, Barbara Marsh in Las Vegas, NV. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS temple on April 29, 1975 for time and eternity. They made their home in Bakersfield, CA and had three sons, Craig, Gary and Jeff.
Gordon attended Bakersfield Junior College where he played football and ran track. He owned a Farmers Insurance franchise for a season, but made his career as a Pipefitter in the oilfields. He retired in 1988.
Gordon was a lover of country and is a World War II veteran. He enlisted in the Marine Air Corps right out of high school, shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served in the Marine Air Corps. In 2015 Gordon was fortunate to travel with the Utah Honor Flight to Washington, DC with other veterans to see the WWII memorial. It was an experience of a lifetime.
The greatest joys in Gordon’s life were his family and his faith. In January of 1962 Gordon became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a volunteer in the Los Angeles,
LDS temple for approximately 10 years and maintained a solid testimony of the restored gospel throughout his life. He carried a strong legacy of faith for his descendants.
Gordon loved helping others and could carry on a conversation with anyone. He knew and had a genuine love for everyone.
Gordon was a lifelong fan of the LA Dodgers and the Bakersfield College Renegades. He loved the beach, especially body surfing. You could always tell which bodysurfer was Gordon by his bald head in front of the wave and his right leg sticking up through the middle of the wave. Gordon was the first one in the water and the last to get out, even in his later years. He passed on that love to his children and grandchildren. Gordon also enjoyed bike riding and reading.
He is survived by his son, Craig (Diane) of Seattle, WA; son, Gary (Shawn) of Waxahachie, TX; son, Jeff (Esperanza) of Magna, UT; as well as 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Barbara, and sister Dorothy.
Services will be held Monday, March 26, 2018 at 11 AM, at the College Heights Ward LDS Church Building located at 1903 Bernard, Bakersfield, CA 93305, near Heritage Park.
