Mary Younger Jaynes, 85, of New Orleans, LA, passed away early on August 31st.


She was preceded in death by her mother, Camila Meador; her father, Chester Younger; her husband, William O. Jaynes, as well as her eldest son, William O. Jaynes, Jr.


She was the beloved mother of three sons, David, Chet, and Danny Jaynes, and two daughters, Susan Stainback and Nancy Jaynes. She will also be mourned by her seven grandchildren: Camilla, Sarah and Joshua Brewer, Katie Stainback, and Addie, Sophie, and Jillie Jaynes, as well as many lifelong friends.


Mrs. Jaynes was a retired teacher who taught in both the Jefferson Parish and Orleans Parish public school systems. She graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She earned an M.Ed. from Loyola University, was a certified reading specialist, and continued her studies, earning many graduate hours toward her doctorate. For years, Mrs. Jaynes tutored students after school hours and organized summer reading clinics in the New Orleans area. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi honorary educational fraternity, as well as other professional organizations. She loved road trips and planned many family vacations. She shared a love of nature, animals, and the written word with her children and grandchildren.


Mary Jaynes, first and foremost, was devoted to her family.


Visitation will begin at 9:30 am followed by a brief funeral service at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Dr. in Metairie.
