McHENRY - Donald W. Hammer, 87, of McHenry, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at his home.
He was born March 30, 1918, in Chicago, to Charles C. and Lillian L. (Born) Hammer. On May 18, 1946, he married Patricia Hergenrother at St. Lawrence Church in Chicago.
Formerly of Chicago, he was a former employee for Lerner Newspapers in the Chicago area. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Merchant Marine.
He was a member of the Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years; four children, David A. (Alexandra) Hammer of Palatine, Kathleen (Michael) Roche of Chicago, Donald P. (Sheryl) Hammer of Lansing and Lauri (Thomas) McNulty of Johnsburg; 12 grandchildren, Heather, Emily, William and Laura Hammer, Christopher and Madeline Roche, Matthew, Michael, Anne, Suzanne and Patrick Hammer, and Griffin McNulty; a sister, Berenice Teall of Ventura, Calif.; a brother, Edward (Judy) Hammer of Glenview; a sister-in-law, Joan Hammer of Crystal Lake; and two brothers-in-law, William (Catherine) Hergenrother and Thomas (Emily) Hergenrother.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Hammer; two brothers, Chester and Robert Hammer; and a sister, Gladys Sahling.
The visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, until the 12:30 p.m. funeral Mass is celebrated at the Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry. The Rev. Robert Sherry will officiate.
Inurnment will be in Holy Apostles Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Holy Apostles Building Fund or to Seasons Hospice.
