Son of Alexander McNutt & Mary Louisa Ellis Paxton. He graduated at the Virginia Military Institute, July 4, 1860. Moved to Mississippi, entering the Southern army, as a private. He attained the rank of Major of Cavalry before the end of the war. He was with John Morgan in his raid through Indiana and Ohio, was captured, and was exchanged several times. Discharged at the close of the war, He was a commissioner from Mississippi for the Centennial Exhibition, and later for the New Orleans Exposition. As a Mason he reached grand commander of his state. He was a zealous Methodist, and was often honored by the church. His home was at Vicksburg.
