He and his wife and daughters Matilda, Caroline, and Anna came to America on the ship "Maria" arriving 9/13/1867. Their destination was listed as "Delaware" but from the 1870 census on they lived in Manistee County Michigan. Anna is 6 months old on the ship but is deceased by the 1870 census.

Uncle of Joachim Ruthenberg and Henry Ruthenberg via his eldest half-sister Hanna (1803-1882)

According to great-grandson Laverne Hugmeyer he was a Prussian nobleman known as "Baron von Freiheit" while living in Germany. He allegedly sold all of his belongings and moved his family here as he was unhappy with life there. In America he was a bouncer known as "Mecklenburg John". The only part of any of this that has been proven is that he was from Mecklenburg.
