Contributed: Anna McCullough Allen, widow of Charles S. Allen, and a native of Waterloo, NY., died at her home on North street, Marcellus, Monday morning, May 13, after an illness of 15 weeks. Death came to her as she slept and this she was found by her daughter, Mrs Cora Marshfield as she returned from her duties as night telephone operator.
Mrs Allen was born Anna McCullough, oldest child of Patrick & Mary Miles McCullough, October 21, 1818 in Waterloo. Owing to the death of her parents while she was still very young, she was forced to leave school to support her younger sisters and brothers.
Indeer her whole life, until her later years, when she became so feeble, was spent in doing for others. A great reader Mrs Allen enjoyed the good books and keep pace with the times through the daily papers. An interesting conversationalist, she loved to have friends call for a chat on current events or the days of yesterdays.
The death of her youngest daughter,Mrs Earl Springstead, almost 3 years ago, was a great shock and she has never been so well since that time. On the first Tuesday of February Mrs Allen was stricken with a heart ailment and has been confined to her bed ever since. Her suffering at times was intense and only her indomitable will power carried her through the months since that day.
The death of a favorite grandson four weeks ago was kept from her and the first knowledge of that was when she opened her eyes and found him waiting for her with all the other dear ones gone before.
We can not wish her back because she had lived a long and useful life and was worthy of a sweet and peaceful rest. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock from the funeral parlors of Jones & Uttley, Rev Harold Gaswell of St. Johns Episcopal Church officiating. Bearers were Stephen Hunt, Carl Webb, Emmett Hopkins and Ray Bennett. Interment was at beautiful Highland. Survivors are 2 daughters, Mrs Cora Marshfield and Mrs Mary Allen of Marcellus; one son, James Allen of Waterloo; and 11 grandchildren. May she rest in peace and may light perpetually shine on her.
