William L. Ely, 91, of Jersey Shore, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 9, 1923, in Betula, he was a son to the late Lyle W. and Theresa E. (Lorenzini) Ely.

His wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Adams, preceded him in death; they were united in marriage on April 15, 1950, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Also preceding him in death was a grandson, Mitchell W. Hollick; and a brother, Lawrence E. Ely.

Bill attended schools in Sugar Run and Kinzua and then graduated from Bradford High School in 1942.

He worked for Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, N.Y., until entering the Navy in 1943.

He served as an Aviation Machinist Mate in several U.S. locations and then was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He always kept his interest in aircraft of that era.

Bill came to Jersey Shore to work for his uncle's auto and home supply store in 1946.

In 1956, he joined State Farm Mutual as an agent and continued with the company until retiring in 1994.

He was active and involved in the community, a member of the Jersey Shore Lions Club from its earliest days and serving a term as its president.
With the club, he helped stage the United States Canoe Association's championship race on the Susquehanna River in 1987.
For many years Bill participated in softball and bowling leagues.
His other interests included fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, poker with his buddies and good conversation.

Surviving are four children,
Sarah E. Ely, (Larry) of Wheaton, Maryland,
Mary Alice "Molly" (Jon) Hollick, of Jersey Shore,
William L. Jr. (Susan) Ely, of Jersey Shore,
James A. (Lisa) Ely, of Jersey Shore;

seven grandchildren, Katie (Christopher) Reeve, Holly (Robert) Dittmar, Kelly (Christopher) Kolak, Nathaniel (Stephanie) Hollick, Emily (John) Kaluzny, Josephine Ely and Julia Ely;
five great-grandchildren, Roman, Dominic and Everly Dittmar, Laine Kolak and Elizabeth Hollick;

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 229 S. Broad St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. Kerry R. Aucker officiating.
Visitation will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at the church.

Burial will be held at Jersey Shore Cemetery.
