Howard loved outdoor adventure, especially metal-detecting and relic hunting. He continued his collecting of Civil War relics and readings throughout his life. A devoted family man, Howard and his wife Carol resided in Catharpin with their two sons until 1980, when they built a new home in Catlett on the former farm of Carol’s mother. In 2002, Howard and Carol moved to Amissville.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Elaine Patton of Amissville, VA, who had been caring for Howard in their home when he succumbed to his long illness; two sons, Gregory Howard Patton of Viewtown, VA, and Kenneth Winston Patton of Waxhaw, NC; two sisters, Jane Holton of Winston-Salem, NC, and Esther Blankenship of Angier, NC; one brother, Arthur Patton of Catlett, VA; two grandsons, Nikolas Walker Patton of Viewtown, VA, and Luke Alexander Patton of Waxhaw, NC; three step-grandchildren, Matt, Elizabeth, and Nicholas; and one great-step-granddaughter, Jayla. Howard was blessed with many nieces, nephews, and in-laws whose company he greatly enjoyed, and was also comforted by his church family – friends and neighbors at Washington Baptist Church.
