Doug Pickering's educational background includes Carnegie Institute of Technology (BFA, 1943) Pennsylvania State University (MS 1952), special studies with Max Beckman at the University of California and most important to him, four study grants to work in the Scandanavian countries in 1955, Greece, particularly the Cycladian Islands in 1970 and most recently a sabbatical leave to travel to Soviet Union museums. He is currently on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University. He has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, has been in the 1967 Carnegie International and his work may be seen in many private and corporate collections. As one of the original members of Pittsburgh's Gallery G, he has been active in large scale sculptural installations across the country. He spent four spirited years as Chairman of the Mayor's Art Commission in Pittsburgh. Currently, he is designing proposals for a CMU campus sculpture that reflects the art and technology section he has curated for this exhibition.
