Gainesville - Otto Roy Hanneld, 98 of Gainesville passed away December 6th, 2014 at the Terrace Health and Rehabilitation Center. Roy was born on Christmas Day, 1915 to Gottlieb and Mathilda (Isaak) Hanneld in Kulm, ND. One of seven children, Roy is predeceased by his brothers, Albert, Harry, Raymond and Gordon and isters Alice and Mabel. He is survived by his wife, Wyena of Gainesville and his children Michael (Carol) of Saint Simons Island, GA and Elizabeth (Rol) of Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada. Also surviving him are his grandchildren Jennifer, Marjorie, Amanda and Zachary and a great grandson, Miles.
While attending school in Kulm, Roy worked for A.J. Smith at the People's Store. After graduating from Kulm High School in 1935, he continued his studies at the ND Agriculture College in Fargo. Roy also worked for his uncle, N.G. Isaak at the Kulm Mobil Oil Station and the Kulm Messenger newspaper. Enlisting in the Army Air Force at the beginning of WWII, Roy attended the Ryan School of Aeronautics in San Diego, CA and the Allison Aircraft Engine School in Indianapolis, IN. Roy became an engine specialist on the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. Following his service, he attended the Teletype Maintenance School in Pleasentville, Long Island, NY and worked as a compositor and line-o-type operator in Waycross and Brunswick, GA and several other newspapers in Illinois, Indiana and California. While in Waycross, Roy met and Married Marjorie Davis and together they had two children, Elizabeth and Michael. Pursuing a love for watch making, Roy attended the Swatze School of Watch and Clock Making in Chicago and operated a successful jewelry store in Mauston, WI for several years.
Roy and Wyena, the love of his life, were married in 1995 and made their home in Hawthorne, FL. They traveled throughout the US and Canada, spending time with family and friends. Always ready with a good story, often about his escapades in Kulm or the Military, Roy entertained family and friends with his wonderful sense of humor. We feel so fortunate to have been a part of his life. He will be sorely missed.
Funeral services for Mr. Hanneld will be Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 2:00pm in the Forest Meadows Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation one hour prior starting at 1:00pm. Interment will follow in Forest Meadows Memorial Park East's "Military Garden of Honor".
