Karen Abse, 55, of Midlothian, died January 21, 2006, while whitewater kayaking on the James River she loved so well. She is survived by her father, David Abse and his wife, Hannah; sisters, Joan and Randi Abse; and brother-in-law, John Southmayd. In addition, Karen leaves behind her devoted German Shepherds, Sirius and Nevada; as well as many loving friends and acquaintances. Karen was a true renaissance woman, excelling in everything she loved. She had many passions, including participating in and teaching others the sports she loved, particularly canoeing and kayaking, mountain and rock climbing, mountain biking, racquetball, soccer, and soccer refereeing. Creating copper weathervanes, sculptures and elegant tapestries were a few of her many talents. Karen was well-known for her unique ability to bring folks together and make important things happen. She worked on coordinating volunteer efforts at the Xterra and Balance Bar Games, the annual JROC Swap Meet and James River clean-up activities. Karen's undying love of community also led her to work as a school mentor for needy children and for Mesa Visa, assisting disabled children through therapeutic horseback riding. Karen's undying love for adventure, her devotion to friends, her dazzling blue eyes and mischievous smile will be forever mourned. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, 1 p.m., at Robious Landing Park, 3800 James River Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James River Outdoor Coalition, P.O. Box 297, Richmond, Va. 23219.
