Claude Thomas Phillips, 81, of Asheville, passed away Tuesday, December 09, 2014 at the J. F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.

A native of Asheville, Mr. Phillips was born November 16, 1933 to the late James Madison Phillips and Clota Lee (Hunter) Phillips. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Davis; and his son-in-law, Mark Mathis.

Mr. Phillips served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He later became the owner of Production Welding and Fabrication in Asheville. He was a member of the Baptist faith, as well as the Moose Lodge #1705 in Marion. Mr. Phillips worked hard and was very dedicated to his work.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elaine (Allman) Phillips of the home; children, Claudia Hensley (Gene) of Swannanoa, J.C. Phillips (Tammy) of Asheville, Becky Mathis of Asheville, and Michael Phillips (Laurie) of Asheville; brother, Jimmy Phillips (Annette) of Etowah; 7 grandchildren, Matthew Hensley, Stephanie Hensley, Patricia Brown, Alesha Crouch, Joseph Mathis, Shanna Phillips, and Jonathan Phillips; and 3 great-grandchildren, Noah Hensley, Emilyn Hensley, and Eli Graham.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM, Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Swannanoa Church of God with Rev. Sherman J. Tweed officiating. A visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be held 10:00 AM Friday, December 12 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Phillips’ memory to the J. F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center for their wonderful care of Mr. Phillips and his family.
