Lena Lucy Stice

Death: Feb. 3, 1948
A long, busy useful life ended at one o'clock Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, when death came to Mrs. Lena Lucy Stice, widow of the late James Stice. Mrs. Stice passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Smith, corner of 3rd and Illinois strets, where she had been seriously ill for some time. Mrs. Stice was born in Cowley County, Kansas, January 6, 1872 and came with her parents, James Kyle Polk Smith and Catharine (Bickel) Smith to Oswego in 1880. She was united in marriage with James Stice here on April 4, 1890. Mr. Stice died June 28, 1939. Mother of a large family, Mrs. Stice's life was a busy one, and one of devotion and self-sacrifice but she was never too busy to lend assistance to others. She was held in highest esteem by all who knew her. She is survived by ten children, six daughters, Mrs. Bessie Axton, Winton, Calif.; Mrs. Susie Smith and Mrs. Cora Carrell, both of Oswego; Mrs. Maud Barham, Longview, Texas; Mrs. Bertha Stoneciplier, Great Bend; Mrs. Leona Bagby, Hallowell and four sons, Ralph Stice, Oswego; Howard Stice and Leo Stice, both of Winton, Calif., and Henry Stice of Meade, Kansas. Surviving also are 59 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, a total of 103 direct descendants. She is survived also by two sisters, Mrs. Birdie S. Soogier, of Oxford, and Mrs. Rebecca Jane Stice, Oswego, together with other more distant relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held in the Assembly of God Church at eleven o'clock Thursday morning, Feb. 5, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. C. F. Hayes. Mrs Dovie Burrows and Mrs. Barham sang "Asleep in Jesus." The pall bearers were grandsons, James Barham, J. C. Barham, Calvin A. Collins, Raymond Wertz, Ellis Reed and Cecil Hurst. Interment wa made in the family lot in Pleasant Valley Vemetery, under direction of the Dale Funeral Home.
