As early as the 1855 New York state census he would appear to have been in the county home in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. By the 1860 census enumeration he was in Jackson township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, farm laborer, pauper, in the Hiram McIntyre and Sophia Osborne household. By the 1870 census enumeration he was at the county home in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania and there in the 1880 census enumeration, listed as single, shoe maker, and "leg off."
