David H. Thomas, 91, of Lancaster died Dec. 6, 2014, at his home.

Born in Bloomsburg, he was the son of the late Harold D. and Helen Rebecca Seesholtz. He was the husband of Kathryn Conrad Thomas, to whom he had been married for 66 years.

Prior to moving to Lancaster in 1953, he was a resident of Orangeville, Columbia County.

During World War II, he served in the 6th Army, Pacific Theater, with the 38th Division, the “Avengers of Bataan.” He witnessed General MacArthur’s return to the Philippines and the preliminary act of surrender which led to the formal end of the war.

He retired as an administrator from Pequea Valley School District, where he served for 25 years, first as the principal of seven one-room schoolhouses, then Salisbury Township Elementary School and Pequea Valley Intermediate School.

Mr. Thomas was active in community affairs. He was the first director of Head Start of Lancaster County; served on the board of directors for Community Action Program (CAP) and the PIAA. He was active in the Salisbury Lions Club for many years, where he received the distinguished Melvin Jones Award for his humanitarian service. He was a mentor to incarcerated young men and assisted them with their transition into the community. He was also a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge 460 F&AM.

He is survived by his children: Jeffrey D. Thomas, fiancé of Diane Coffey of Lititz; Patricia K., wife of Kent Spotts of Peach Bottom, Pa.; Ann D. Thomas of Lancaster, and Pamela T., wife of John Stoner; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Kocher, Helen Ann Davis, Roselyn Smith, Shirley Bower, Doris Levan, Deanna Stauffer, Dale Thomas and John Thomas.

He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at Church of the Apostles UCC, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kathryn Kuhn officiating. Friends may call at the church Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
