Gary L. Simon Sr., 61, of 1930 Ellen St., died at 12:12 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006, at home, of natural causes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and the Tri State Viet Nam Veterans. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Simon formerly worked as a lithographer at Johnson Graphics for 30 years and was lastly employed at Union Hoermann Press.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1944, in Dubuque, son of Henry P. and Constance (Honerbaum) Simon.

He served in the Army during the Viet Nam War as a helicopter mechanic.

He loved writing poems, the words just came to him. He wrote poems for the Dubuque Anthology and Julien's Journal. He co-authored a book of poems, "Reflections from the Heart" which contained his poems. The proceeds went for breast cancer research and to the Traveling Teddy Bear program for the children at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

Gary was a true Hawkeye and Colts fan and he loved his city of Dubuque.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He never complained, always put others first and he liked to make people laugh. Gary will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, Victoria L. "Vicki" (Duffy Mielke) Simon; a son, Gary L. Jr. (Gina) Simon; two daughters, Tracy A. (Gary) Runde and Angel M. (Jay) Atkinson; four grandchildren, Nathyn and Kodye Runde and Eve and Jachin Atkinson; a sister, Diane Kerstein; two brothers, Dan (Carol) Simon and Rick (Sharon) Simon; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Christian Simon; and a sister, Darlene Simon and a brother, Dale Simon, both in infancy.
