Martin Henry Potter Jr., 88, of Galena, Kan., passed from this life on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at his home with his family at his side.

Martin was born on Oct. 5, 1926, in Preston, Kan., to the union of Martin Henry Sr. and Gladys (Henderson) Potter.

He was united in marriage to Erma Iola (Redwine) Potter, on June 27, 1948, in Pratt, Kan.

Martin served in the United States Army, enlisting on May 22, 1944 and retiring in 1977, after 33 years of service as master sergeant. Decorations and citations earned while in the service are, Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, two Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal Germany.

Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, V.F.W Post 408, and the Knights Temple. He enjoyed target shooting, golfing, hunting, and bowling. He loved traveling and family gatherings or just sitting listening to music.

Martin is survived by his wife Erma Potter, of the home; one son, Marc Potter, of Riverton, Kan.; four daughters, Susan Whiteneck and husband, Troy, of Baytown, Texas, Yvonne Roller and husband, Clayton, of Baxter Springs, Kan., Michelle Swaney and husband, Greg, of Bartlesville, Okla., and Virginia Krehbiel and husband, Monte, of Wichita, Kan.; 14 grandchildren, Deborah Crain, Donna Frick, Christopher Whiteneck, Mikel Krukewitt, Chad Whiteneck, Tonya Burgraff, Orion Roller, Tara Parkison, Justin Swaney, Michael H. Potter, John W. Potter, Joe Krehbiel, Sarah Krehbiel, and Lisa Krehbiel; 21 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Martin is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Crain; and one grandson, Nathaniel Swaney.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12, at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 7 p.m., at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the First United Methodist Church.
