Catherine Virginia “Ginny” Bowman, 82, formerly of Harrisonburg, VA, died peacefully at her home in Tarpon Springs, Fla., on Saturday, November 29, 2014. Born on December 19, 1931, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, she was the youngest of six children born to the late Elizabeth Cogbill McCall and Samuel Leonard McCall Sr.

While Ginny was a homemaker and totally devoted to her family, she always found the time to care for others in time of need. She never met a stranger and her home was open to all. Throughout her life, she maintained a sweet, loving and nurturing demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her signature gifts of joy and generosity will long be remembered.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg, prior to moving to Florida in 2005. Possessing a true servant’s heart, she devoted much of her time to “Alex’s Angels,” a volunteer group of women of the church who helped plan and prepare prayer luncheons, receptions, dinners and the like. She loved being an “angel” as her work with this group was very fulfilling and she had many fond memories of this time in her life.

During her youth, she enjoyed baton twirling and developed a love of parades. This led to her assisting the local VFW in planning and organizing the welcome home victory parade for U.S. troops who served in Operation Desert Storm. Her hard work and devotion was instrumental in this event being one of the largest and most attended parades in Harrisonburg’s history.

She is survived by three daughters, Terri Whetzel of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Linda Tobin of Verona, and Carolyn Smith and husband, Kenneth, of Harrisonburg; a sister, Patsy Fitzwater and husband, Norman, of Elkton; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Szelagiewicz; two brothers, Samuel McCall Jr. and Johnson (Jack) McCall; and two sisters, Elizabeth Yates and Mary Gaylor.

A celebration of life service will be officiated by Dr. John F. Sloop at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. Interment at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg, 17 Court Square, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, Generations Crossing, 3765 Taylor Spring Lane, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the charity of your choice.
